Spec ops the line2/22/2023 ![]() ![]() Walker, on the other hand, gets innocents killed because acting out a power fantasy is more important to him than his actual orders. Spec Ops, by contrast, takes such a weapon and exposes players to the reality of just how horrifying it can be, and in doing so, underlines why it's so important for militaries to have rules of engagement. ![]() ![]() Video games often trivialize the tools at an advanced army's disposal, turning airstrikes or nuclear bombs into power-ups or multiplayer rewards. The scene remains shocking because it exposes how horrific modern warfare can be. This leads to the infamous white phosphorus scene, where both player and avatar unwittingly incinerate a camp full of civilians. Whereas many war shooters use cinematics and set-piece spectacles to rob audiences of agency, Spec Ops requires the player's participation. Instead, players must typically carry out his actions to proceed, whether that means leading charges, gunning down enemies or even exterminating them with incendiary weapons. In keeping with the themes of choice and consequence, Walker is rarely controlled by cutscenes. This desire to play the hero is foundational to the tragedy of the story and nowhere is it better reflected than in the journey of its protagonist Captain Walker. Spec Ops: The Line is an action-packed Third-Person Shooter that delivers heart pounding physically close combat through a squad-based play mechanic. The American military enters Dubai with a sincere desire to help and, while their presence ultimately makes things worse, it's abundantly clear that their intentions were noble. This more personal focus allows the game to delve deeper into the psychology of its characters, exploring the consequences of the choices made by soldiers in stressful situations. Spec Ops avoids this minefield by treating its soldiers as individuals who live and die by their own choices, not nationalistic hammers with which some poorly-characterized villains of the week are bludgeoned. Modern military shooters are often criticized, especially by players outside of the US, because they generally depict the nation's armies as heroic paragons that can do no wrong, even when they have their enemies utterly outnumbered. There needs to be more (not games) interactive experiences like this. While the game isn't explicitly about war, its smaller scale makes it feel like a more genuine reflection of it. One may even argue that some of these said decisions are things that real soldiers must make from time to time, just to be called war criminals for doing what they HAD TO DO. /rebates/2fgame2fSpecOpsTheLine&252fgame252fSpecOpsTheLine26tc3dbing-&idgog&nameGOG&ra4. Unique to video games, there's also non-linear storytelling in the game as well when the player is forced to make some remarkably unpleasant decisions. A Third-Person modern military Shooter designed to challenge players morality by putting them in the middle of unspeakable situations. While that does sound well-intentioned, the way the plot unfolds takes Captain Walker and crew into an extremely brutal fight for survival. I won't spoil who the enemy turns out to be. This time you're not killing Nazis, Al-Qaeda, or aliens you're going into the beautiful Middle- Eastern city of Dubai to help evacuate its refugees from the worst sandstorm in recorded history. After going through the campaign on this game, I found myself more appreciative of what our men and women on the frontlines go through every day, because this game, as I said, shows you the reality of war and not its glorified state like in so many others such as Call of Duty and Battlefield. In fact, it may even be safe to say that this could be considered a horror game by definition. The gameplay is sucks, but the briliant storytelling is enough to making. While most war games out there tend to glorify the violence, this game (it's hard to call it a game when it isn't exactly fun and it's so narrative-focused) shows the player the reality of war in all of its horror. ![]()
